LeBron James Highlights #Strongest Women For Nike LeBron 16 Launch

words // Nick DePaula:

This week, LeBron James is beginning to officially roll out his latest Nike signature shoe, and he’s taking an entirely different approach for his 16th model.

In conjunction with Harlem’s Fashion Row, a New York-based organization that’s long showcased multicultural designers through a series of runway shows, podcasts and events, James is launching a limited edition LeBron 16 just for women. The shoe was reimagined by three HFR designers, Kimberly Goldson, Felisha Noel and Undra Celeste Duncan, and features an updated lacing system, molded lion graphic heel overlay and a removable leather collar strap.

A featured guest and co-presenter earlier tonight at HFR’s annual Style & Fashion awards show, James took to Instagram to celebrate the show’s #STRONGEST theme, by celebrating 18 women on his Instagram Story representing strength and prowess in their own fields.

“As someone who has a platform, because of what I do, I thought it was important to lend that platform to a group of people that I believe are under-recognized,” says LeBron. “Being the son, husband and father of strong African American women, I felt like this was something I wanted to do for them and for all the strong women out there who are succeeding despite what might be stacked against them.”

In addition to the #JamesGang closest to him, including his mother Gloria, wife Savannah and daughter Zhuri, the campaign also highlights storied Nike athletes like Serena Williams, Maya Moore and A’ja Wilson, along with leaders in the business, journalism and entertainment fields like Harlem’s Fashion Row founder Brandice Daniel, Cari Champion and Lena Waithe.

Check out each featured female below, and you can look for the HFR x Nike LeBron 16 to launch this Friday, September 7th on the SNKRS app and Nike.com.

Cardi B Says The #MeToo Movement Overlooks Women In Hip-Hop

For several months, the #MeToo movement has shed light on how prevalent sexual harassment and abuse are in women’s lives, both inside and outside Hollywood. But according to Cardi B, there’s a double standard at play: women in the hip-hop community aren’t being heard in the same way, and the movement has yet to effectively seep into the music industry.

In a new interview with Cosmopolitan, the rapper calls out #MeToo for not being fully inclusive, especially when it comes to video models, who are often seen and not heard.

“A lot of video vixens have spoke about this and nobody gives a fuck,” she explained. “When I was trying to be a vixen, people were like, ‘You want to be on the cover of this magazine?’ Then they pull their dicks out. I bet if one of these women stands up and talks about it, people are going to say, ‘So what? You’re a ho. It don’t matter.’

“These producers and directors, they’re not woke, they’re scared,” Cardi continued, questioning the motives behind the high-profile men publicly supporting #MeToo.

Along the same times, Cardi also discussed her past life as a stripper and how it’s often twisted in the media to paint a misleading picture of her life. The truth, she said, is that stripping is a legitimate job that warrants respect.

“People say, ‘Why do you always got to say that you used to be a stripper? We get it,’” Cardi said. “Because y’all don’t respect me because of it, and y’all going to respect these strippers from now on.”

As per usual, Cardi doesn’t seem to be at a loss for words, and with her debut album finally on the way, it looks like we’ll be hearing a lot more from her soon.

Air Jordan 1 High Zip Debuts for Women

The newly vindicated Air Jordan 1 High Zip, one of three components that encapsulate Jordan Brand’s spring 2018 women’s collection, is undeniably the largest risk among the stellar offering. Its high arching, laceless frame, disrupts the classic tone and stance of the Air Jordan 1. Doing so in a method that promotes creativity and challenges longtime fans of the shoe to view it from a modern lens.

Removed from traditional lacing to springboard zipped closure, Jumpman branded zippers begin at the base above the toebox and extend beyond reach of the ankle collar. This allows the tongue at act as an inner cushioning system while a Nike Air tab logo on the tongue adds nostalgia to this contemporary update.

Expect the Air Jordan 1 High Zip to release on March 8 for a retail price of $ 150.

My Unforgettable Experience with Nike Women and The Los Angeles Lakers

words & experience by Mayam Lillard:

It all started with an Instagram photo I uploaded wearing a predominantly Nike ‘fit with a satirical caption that tagged both @Nike and @NikeLosAngeles, asking them to call me…

Two weeks later, a friend of mine tagged me in a tweet that Ray Polanco Jr. of Nice Kicks had posted asking for recommendations of “stylish LA women.” Some DM’s and a day or so later I’m confirmed for an exclusive retail experience that I was promised to be something amazing.

A couple days after that, I found myself at the Century City Mall at the Nike Womens x Nordstrom sneaker boutique for what, in fact, would be an unforgettable experience I’ve been able to participate in…like, ever!

Mayam Lillard’s Unforgetable Experience with Nike Womens and the LA Lakers

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably felt a little discouraged with how “sneaker” culture is predominantly marketed towards men. There have been drops that I can’t cop due to the fact that I have ridiculously tiny feet and the smallest men’s size is usually a 6 – (roughly an 8 in women’s, I’m a Women’s 6.5) or the drops that are “women only” have lots and lots of bright colors that I really don’t want to wear. In everyone’s defense, the sneaker industry has been making strides to keep women in mind, but I still feel like it’s a little behind given that we’re in 2017. So, with that being said, can you imagine my excitement when I not only found out this boutique existed, but that I was getting the opportunity to participate? #Stoked.

The Nordstrom x Nike sneaker boutique is an exclusive endeavor between the two retail giants that is meant to bring the ultimate sneaker experience…FOR WOMEN! Yes, you heard me. The entire thing was designed and executed entirely for the ladies.

So the boutique is located conveniently front and center as you walk into Nordstrom from the Constellation Blvd side entrance – considered “level 1” according to the Westfield Center Map. As soon as I walked in, I was greeted by the amazing team at Nike x Nordstrom and surprised with a pair of exclusive Nike SF Air Force 1- Mid Los Angeles that I completely fell in love with the second I had them on my feet. This specific style was ONLY available at the Nordstrom x Nike Century City.

That wasn’t the only surprise…

From there, Nike presented me an opportunity pick out any NBA jersey available to customize into my own. The jerseys available were Los Angeles Clippers (Blake Griffin), Los Angeles Lakers (Brandon Ingram), and Golden State Warriors (Steph Curry). Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’re well aware of the complete Nike taking over the NBA jerseys again. The customization station had a seamstress and tailor on hand to add a variety of patches of my choice as well as alter the cut of my jersey in a handful of specific styles. The patches all encouraged strength in femininity and the cuts catered flattering to the modern streetwear gal.

I chose the Lakeshow Brandon Ingram jersey and customized mine by adding two super cute patches and cutting it in the “high neck” option. This basically cut off some of the sides for more of a “feminine” look.  I got a large jersey and chose to rock it as a dress. Shout out to Mya.

Overall, my experience was an amazing one. Nice Kicks, Nordstrom and Nike really came together to have me part of a perfectly curated area for the stylish and sporty woman. It has always been a dream to be able to collaborate with a brand that has been with me since I was a kid. All throughout my childhood and into adulthood I’ve used Nike products for both function and fashion. From the 2002 Nike Mercurial Vapor soccer cleats to my new SF Air Force 1 Mid – LA’s the brand has kept me and continues to keep me going.

I guess I should tell Nike to call me more often

The Mountains Where Women Live as Men It began hundreds of years…

The Mountains Where Women Live as Men

It began hundreds of years ago, deep in the Albanian Alps—an unusual tradition where women, with limited options in life, took the oath of the burrnesha. A pledge to live as a man. To dress like a man, to work like a man, to assume the burdens and the liberties of a man. But these freedoms came with a price: The burrneshas also made a pledge of lifelong celibacy. Today these sworn virgins live on, but their numbers have dwindled. Many Albanians don’t even know they exist. What happens when the society that created you no longer needs you? And how do you live in the meantime?
