This Day in Sneaker History // Tim Duncan Wins First MVP

Don’t it always seem to go that you don’t know what you got ’til it’s gone? While Jonie Mitchell never lied, the saying and Q-Tip quote prove true for Tim Duncan.

For those outside of San Antonio and those with no ties to the Virgin Islands or the Demon Deacons, the Big Fundamental was a force but not always a fan favorite. More bank shots than alley-oops and with a quieter and calmer game and personality than that of other 4-spots in the league — namely KG and Sheed — it was easy to not give Timmy his props, right?

Wrong. #21 in the rafters but #1 in the all-time rankings for his position, Duncan might just be the best player of the post-Jordan era, surpassing Shaq, Kobe and other greats with rings and stats. While his team-first attitude made him the perfect protege for Pops and a great guy on and off the court as Manu and more will attest, he was still as sharp of an individual player as it gets. For these efforts, he was awarded with his first MVP trophy on this day 15 years ago.

Wearing his Nike Air Max Duncan II signature shoe in front of his home team fans, Timmy would go on to win the award in back-to-back fashion by repeating the next year. The only difference for kick collectors? The next time he would be on adidas which he would rock for the rest of his career.

Because of this and numerous other factors, the Nike Air Max Duncan II has never retroed and likely never will. Mid-top in cut, sleek in styling, the shoe packed synthetic composition and zip-up closure similar to the Foamposite and Flightposite models he made memories and history in before.

There may never be a retro run of any of the Big Fundamental’s signature shoes, but there will likely never be another Tim Duncan, too. Polished, poised and professional, thanks for the memories, TD.

Air Jordan 8 Black/Red Reported to Release This Summer

Now that the first half of the year is quickly coming to a close, it’s safe to say that the Air Jordan 8 “Take Flight” is one of the better non-OG Air Jordans of the first six months. That, and the “Alternate” version of the shoe as well. Later this summer, the 1993 produced model will release in a Black/Red colorway.

Largely outfitted in black suede with matching leather overlays, a light infusion of red and medium grey hit the midsole and outer of this Chicago-inspired Air Jordan 8.

There are currently no release details for this upcoming drop, but stay tuned to Nice Kicks for more on the upcoming Air Jordan 8 Black/Red.

Air Jordan 11 “Navy” Drops This Holiday Season

In years past, Jordan Brand has anchored their holiday lineup with a release of an Air Jordan 11. This year, though, presumably for the first-time ever, two Air Jordan 11s will drop throughout the course of November and December.

The first of those two reported to release on Black Friday is the Air Jordan 11 “Navy” edition.

Constructed in a white mesh upper matched with Midnight Navy patent leather, a University Blue Jumpman marks the heel while a white midsole and customary translucent outer rest below.

If you remember, an Air Jordan 11 “White/Navy” sample surfaced at the turn of the century back in 2000. Certainly unique when compared to the upcoming retail iteration, but that 17-year old sample likely stands as the inspiration for the Black Friday debut.

Jordan Brand has not yet confirmed the November 24, 2017 Jordan Release Date. Stay tuned for more details right here at Nice Kicks.

March was a big month for the Tinker Hatfield designed Nike Air Max 1. Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the shoe re-released in its OG colorways while also appearing with 3/26 stamped on the tongue to signify the holiday made largely in its honor.

Smooth nubuck construction provides space for the ventilation while the remainder of the body sees an infusion of leather. The look is finished with an off-white midsole.
