Colin Kaepernick is the Face of Nike’s 30th Anniversary “Just Do It” Campaign, Signature Collection Also in the Works

Colin Kaepernick, social activist, and former San Francisco 49ers quarterback is the face of Nike’s 30th anniversary “Just Do It” campaign.

A Nike endorser since 2011, Kaepernick broke the news today on Twitter by revealing the first advertisement from the upcoming campaign. A biting, visceral image, shows Colin’s face in intimate detail. Centered into a noir backdrop overlaying the intricacies of his skin, the words “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything” speak in a deafening and cunning tone.

The ad, of course, leans generously into the outcome of Kaepernick’s social injustice protest and subsequent removal from the NFL. Kaepernick famously sat during the national anthem in August 2016 and kneeled during America’s song in weeks thereafter. Other NFL players quickly and forcefully followed his lead.

In the two years since Colin’s initial peaceful protest, it’s largely believed he has been “blackballed” from the league. Kaepernick, in turn, filed a collusion grievance against the NFL in October, stating they organized an effort to keep him out of the league based on his social and political beliefs.

Nike’s restored commitment to Kaepernick seemingly works in contrast with one of their biggest business partners — the National Football League. Renewing its deal as the league’s official apparel provider back in March — an agreement that will continue through 2028 — Nike realigning with Kaep appears grossly in opposition given his very public court battle with the NFL. Yet, he’s the face of a hugely important campaign for Nike, one that will also feature LeBron James, Serena Williams, Odell Beckham Jr., Lacey Baker, and Shaquem Griffin.

Although Kaepernick has been on the Nike roster for seven years now, he’s been visibly absent from brand advertisements for the last two. Nike seemed at a loss for what do to with Kaepernick during said period. However, as ESPN’s Darren Rovell points out, “Nike has been paying Colin Kaepernick all along.”

His presence in the budding “Just Do It” campaign represents newness for both parties, as Kaepernick’s representatives — Mark Geragos and Ben Meiselas — reportedly worked to restructure his deal in recent months. As stated by Charles Robinson, a senior NFL reporter from Yahoo Sports, Kaep’s new deal with Nike will be on par with other top-tier football players. His “star” contract is reported to pay him in the millions of dollars per year. In addition, Colin will have his own branded collection that will include sneakers, jerseys, and shirts. It’s also worth noting that “star” contracts in the past have included a clause for royalties.

While Nike should be applauded for championing Kaepernick with an extended contract and newly heightened brand visibility, interest from other sportswear brands may have thrust them into motion. Back in April, Adidas publicly stated that they had an interest in signing Colin if he played for an NFL team in the upcoming season which kicks off later this week. However, given the climate of Kaepernick’s legal battle with the league, it’s off base to assume that Adidas had any real assurance that Kaepernick would suit up in the NFL this season.

It’s actually a foregone conclusion that Kaepernick won’t play in the NFL this season. And, if you’re keeping pace, evident that he won’t play in the NFL at any point in the future. So how does Nike promote a football player who’s no longer a professional football player? That’s simple; Colin Kaepernick was never just a football player to begin with. The same way Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Serena Williams, and countless others aren’t just athletes. They are all so much more. That’s always been the driving force.

The Air Jordan 4 “Raptors” Highlights Drake’s Signature at the Tongue

Although release details for the Air Jordan 4 “Raptors” remain somewhat of a mystery, what does appear to be clear is that this northern-inspired iteration of the 1989 produced silhouette is indeed affiliated with Drake.

By now everyone is painfully aware of the rumors surrounding his impending move to adidas. Drake continues to  add fuel to the fire by wearing adidas almost exclusively over the last few months. But before anything official takes place (or doesn’t), there’s still Jordan Brand business at hand. The “Raptors” 4’s represent said business. Sort of.

In lieu of traditional Flight script below the Jumpman logo, Drizzy’s signature is prominently placed on the tongue acting as conclusive evidence that this release was intended for the Toronto son. Yet given the uncertainly of his future with the company, it’s likely the rollout for this shoe will be pretty quiet from a Jordan Brand standpoint. So, in whatever capacity he’s affiliated with this release, it appears to be his final Jordan Brand release.

Stay tuned for more details on the Air Jordan 4 “Raptors” and peep OVO’s Clark Wallabee collaboration here.

5 Things To Expect From Dwyane Wade’s Li-Ning WoW 6 Signature Sneaker

words and photos // Jordan Keyser:

As Dwayne Wade’s 15th NBA season is under way, he welcomes a new journey with the Cleveland Cavaliers and a new signature sneaker with Li-Ning. Since leaving Converse and Jordan Brand for the Chinese based sports performance company, Wade has amassed a core loyal following with the Way of Wade series. The line blends the potential Hall of Famer’s progressive style while offering a solid shoe to hoop in.

The newest WoW 6 is a vast improvement from its predecessor in weight, fashion, and function. I could show you better than I could tell you. Recently while attending Art Basel in Miami, Nice Kicks got a hands on look at what the future of Dwyane Wade’s sneaker line will look like. From limited colorways, to better cushioning, and thinking about life after his own career, the Li-Ning Way of Wade 6 takes the entire line to the next level.

Read ahead for five things to expect from Dwyane Wade’s Li-Ning WoW 6 Sneakers:

NEW, RE-DESIGNED LOGO

A small detail, but noteworthy change on the 6th installment of the Way of Wade line, is the simple but meaningful changes to the logos found on the WOW6.  The updated logo now features 15 Circles to represent Dwayne Wade’s 15th NBA Season, along with the 82 saw teeth around the logo, which represent the NBA’s 82 regular season games.

LIMITED EDITION COLORWAYS

While down in Miami, Way of Wade gave me an exclusive look at the upcoming color ways for rest of 2017 and wha’ts in store for 2018.  Some of the limited WOW6 color ways celebrate Holidays, including a Red/Blue pair for Veterans Day, as well as a Green, Red and Black pair which celebrates the upcoming Christmas Holiday.  Some of my other favorites were the “Sunset” WOW6 which features a Black, Pink, and Orange hits throughout the upper and midsole, and the “Pumpkin” WOW6 which really popped with the use of Fall colors such as Orange, and Yellow, and a glow in the dark outsole.  These along with a slew of other upcoming releases will help the Way of Wade team bring the newly unveiled Way of Wade 6 to life.

PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS

The Way of Wade 6 features some noteworthy performance upgrades, including the use of a breathable-performance mesh upper, as well as the addition of a carbon fiber mid-foot strap that is sure to improve lockdown and stability. The Biggest performance upgrade definitely comes with the introductions of Li-Ning’s newest cushioning technology– Drive Foam Technology.

DRIVE FOAM TECHNOLOGY

The introduction of Li-Ning’s new Drive-Foam Technology is by far the best improvement found in the WOW6, the comfort is next level. Li-Ning teamed up with BASF to create this all new cushioning system found in the WOW6. Those of you unfamiliar with BASF, they are the company that designs and licensesBOOST technology to adidas. So, it should go without saying that this new Drive-Foam Technology is the real deal in terms of comfort, both on, and off-court.

NBA ON-COURT PRESENCE

With Dwayne Wade’s on-court time seeing a reduction this year, Li-Ning and WOW are looking to grow their on-court presence through other NBA players signed to the brand such as José Calderón of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Glenn Robinson III of the Indiana Pacers, and both, Evan Turner and C.J. McCollum of the Portland Trail Blazers.

Dwyane Wade’s Li-Ling WoW 6 is currently available right now online. Retail price is starts at $ 160 for select exclusive colorways. Browse below for an exclusive look at what’s in next for Wade’s newest signature sneaker with Li-Ning.

Kyrie Irving Hopes To Have At Least 12 Nike Signature Shoes, To Make a Sneaker Clock

words // Nick DePaula:

In a recent candid conversation with Cleveland Cavaliers-centric blog WaitingForNextYear, Cavs All-Star guard Kyrie Irving spoke about his involvement with designer Leo Chang on his signature footwear, when you can expect to see the upcoming Kyrie 3 both on court and in stores, and his long-term goals for his line.

Surprisingly, Irving has just one simple goal in mind — he wants to get to 12 signature sneakers — in order to spruce up his home’s interior design.

“I have an aspiration, and Bron has it in his house: I just want to get to 12 and have a clock running,” says Kyrie. “He has a clock running of his shoes. That right there was like a goal of mine to just make it to 12 and then I could choose my best ones. So, yeah, I want to have a clock of my shoes like LeBron.”

Twelve of course works for the hourly breakdown on a clock, but is also esteemed territory for signature lines. Only Michael, Kobe, Allen Iverson, LeBron and Carmelo Anthony have received twelve or more signature models.

Sneaker clocks might not be an entirely new concept, and historically have almost exclusively featured the first dozen Air Jordan models. Hopefully, Kyrie’s revelation about LeBron’s signature timepiece might push the Cavs star to share an image of his home setup. For Irving, we’ll have to wait another nine years for that to become a reality, but we like his chances.

Dwight Howard Unveils PEAK DH1 Signature Shoe In China

words // Nick DePaula
images // Frank You for Nice Kicks

Just last week on Friday, after a series of rumors dating back to early summer, Peak Sports officially announced they were adding Houston Rockets center Dwight Howard to their list of NBA endorsers. Moments later, the @PeakSportsUSA account deleted all of their tweets, causing some concern that they possibly jumped the gun on their announcement, as sources have said that Dwight’s prior contract with adidas doesn’t expire until September 30th.

Nevertheless, Dwight himself was in China over the weekend to celebrate his new partnership with Peak and meet with fans of his newly formed “Peak DH12 Fans Club.” Howard was donning a full head-to-toe Peak outfit, and his jacket surely features a print familiar to the footwear world.

In a ceremony that also included the company’s CEO and its design manager accompanying Dwight on stage, the brand officially unveiled two variations of what could become the Peak DH1 debut signature shoe.

DH1 1200 US_CHINAPeak is letting consumers pick Dwight’s debut DH1 signature shoe among a trio of choices: “Three options for you to decide Howard Peak generation!” Using a stripped down polling service called Wenjuan, the brand has two designs of the DH1 posted, one created by the Peak Sports USA offices, and the other designed at the Peak design center in Beijing.

If you’re not feeling either model, you can also vote for “Option III,” which is simply a black silhouette, and then leave a suggestion for what you’d like to see in the comment box.  You can head to the site now to place your own vote. We don’t yet have an official word on when the sneaker will be making its way to stores, but you can expect to see Dwight wearing the DH1 from the jump as the Rockets begin training camp later this month.

Check out images from the signing ceremony held in Beijing over the weekend, and let us know on Twitter which of the two DH1 designs you like best. Stay tuned, as we’ll have more on the newly formed Dwight Howard and Peak endorsement soon.

HUF and ‘Thrasher’ Launch Austyn Gillette’s Signature Shoe With New Video

Austyn Gillette becomes the latest member of the signature silhouette ranks, with HUF launching his new sneaker – the eponymously-named Gillette – with a new video through Thrasher. The sneaker itself differs from Austyn’s previous outings, specifically his line with former sponsor Habitat Skateboards, in that it adopts a more mature, dressy aesthetic for skating purposes. Said aesthetic falls in line with HUF’s own diverse array of offerings, which has expanded towards formal silhouettes that perform on- and off-the-board. Celebrating this versatility, Gillette takes to the streets of fashionable skate destinations like Berlin, New York City and Copenhagen to showcase the sneaker’s international appeal.
