Chinatown Market is Making Bootleg Chuck Taylors & So Should You

lead image by @jpgutta_

The phrase “Just Do It” is back at the forefront of sports and pop culture, but perhaps it’s just as relevant in fashion and design.

For Mike Cherman, the mind behind the KITH logo, countless Nike Sportswear projects and the brand Chinatown Market, his JDI attitude toward creation is spreading with the intent of more DIY apparel and footwear on the market.

Teaming up with Converse, the Cali resident returned to his home of New York to disrupt the red carpets of Fashion Week to set up shop at the brand’s NY flagship to create bootleg Chucks with his team of experimenters and the people of the Big Apple.

From lacing LeBron with 1 of 1s to having Erykah Badu slide into his DMs, hear why his bootlegging brand is changing the laws of collaboration and shifting the perspective on Do It Yourself style.

Nice Kicks: First off, how’s it feel to be back in New York and tell us about the Converse event.

Mike Cherman: It’s really good to be back in New York and we’re excited to bring some of our customizations here for Fashion Week. We’ve got everything from airbrushing to rhinestones to glitter transfers to hand-painting to the printing gun. We brought almost our entire office out here, so I’m pretty much a little babysitter. [Laughs] We brought it all out so I’m super excited.

Nice Kicks: The bootleg Chucks have made a huge splash. How’d the idea first come about and how does this event see the next evolution of it?

Mike Cherman: You know, that whole thing came out of the idea of taking two of the most demanded things in pop culture and smashing them together. For us, constant experimentation takes place in our office and that experimentation led us to that. Obviously, that bootleg was such a strong idea but it’s really about us continuing to tell the story of customization and the idea that Chucks can change all the time.

As consumers of the Chuck we know it’s a longstanding staple that hasn’t changed in years, but it’s our job to show that they’re so much more. You can really go crazy with them as a canvas. They’re so perfect for us to play with.

Nice Kicks: Growing up in the 2000s whether it be gear or kicks, what was your relationship to both streetwear and bootleg gear?

Mike Cherman: From a young age, I used to go into New York City with my dad. We’d go to Chinatown after he got out of work and we’d go to dinner and buy toys. That left an impression on me as a kid.

But I think the bigger picture is that we’re trying to take the whole DIY nature of what bootlegging really is and that’s creating ideas that don’t already exist and allowing them to happen. It’s almost the idea of forced collaboration. It allows us to constantly create new ideas that maybe the powers that be don’t want to see, but the idea for us is to show the consumer that the ideas are constantly coming.

Nice Kicks: The bootleg Chucks have been gifted and worn by the likes of LeBron James, Nigo and Erykah Badu. How did that interest come about and what’s it like to see them sport your creative work?

Mike Cherman: You know man, the beauty for us is about the idea and less about the credit. It’s beautiful when you see LeBron get those shoes and then Erykah Badu hops in your DM and says, ‘I need them!’ I’ve been growing up listening to her since I was a kid so it’s amazing to see something like that happen.

It’s the validation of the idea, you know? We’re not out here to say Chinatown Market did this. It’s more about can we inspire that DIY nature in the marketplace? After this event, you’re gonna see hundreds of kids who went and made their own Converse and activated it themselves to create their own bootleg. To me, that’s inspiring and our idea in the first place: DIY, make it yourself and go for it. That kind of spirit is what’s going to lead the next generation of creators.

Nice Kicks: Irony and humor are at the heart of the brand. Is it perfect time to be printing a Swoosh on shoes or branding product as Nike when others are doing crazy stuff like cutting the logo off their socks?

Mike Cherman: Exactly, man. We’d like to have that statement to know that we’re behind all those things [that Nike is doing]. We’re not on the other side.

Nice Kicks: Lastly, what’s next from Chinatown Market on the footwear tip?

Mike Cherman: Constant innovation on how we approach footwear projects. I think you’re going to see some really interesting things from us over the next year. We look to just continue to build our relationship with Converse and try to make some interesting projects.

We want to shake up the industry in regards to how people look at collaborations and how they look at small brands and how they can shake up the bigger landscape of retail across the US and across the world.

Eight Things You Should Know About the Nike Air Max 270

Following our exclusive look at the Nike Air Max 270 earlier today, the Swoosh dishes out even more details on its excitable new silhouette. They’ve focused on eight key facts regarding the lifestyle centric Air Max 270 — all of which we detail for you here.

Breaking history almost immediately, the Air Max 270 is championed as Nike’s first Air Unit lifestyle shoe. Sure, there have been other lifestyle driven shoes with aesthetically pleasing Air cushioning, but all others saw a primary focus as a performance runner. It’s also noteworthy that the shoe is inspired by both the Air Max 93 and the Air Max 180, respectively.

The shoes 270 moniker originated from an internal Nike epithet for the Air Max 93, which acts as a call back to the 270 degrees of visibility in the Air Unit. Also, to that end, it’s the tallest Air Unit ever, tallying 32-mm in height. This speaks to the biggest heel volume displacement on record in efforts to support maximum Air comfort.

All this cushioning and height will make appearances on a variety of Nike silhouettes in 2018, many of which will be dressed in different colors.

Another interesting fact about the Air Max 270 is that Kevin Durant was one of the first Nike athletes to wear test the shoe. He loves them and also owns the largest pair: a size 18.

The eighth and final fact regarding the Nike Air Max 270 is its release date: February 1, 2018. Select retailers will stock the shoe as well as Nike SNKRS. Take a closer look below.

Five Artists Who Should Have a Shoe Deal

words & opinion by Creighton Phillips

With Influencers playing a major role in sneaker and apparel sales, there’s an influx of artists who could garner the appeal to take a storied brand to the next level. Here are a few suggestions of some of my favorite artists that could catapult a brand to new heights.

Frank Ocean

Frank Ocean has had a mystique that rivals some of the greatest artists of the previous generations. Waiting roughly five years to bring his latest works to the graces of his fans, Ocean’s ENDLESS visual album, inspired by the works of two time Nike collaborator Tom Sachs, and Blonde were both masterpieces in their own right. Appearing at festivals this year wearing JW Anderson Converse sneakers and Virgil Abloh’s Nike x Off-White Prestos could only make one wonder why is it that the guy who has crafted modern R&B masterpieces has evaded the spotlight of a sneaker collaboration? Could it be saturation or is it that the best is yet to come? We’re hoping for the ladder from fans of the Blonded crooner. We all really want a pair of NIKES from this guy.

King Krule

Another songwriter extraordinaire in need of a sneaker cosign from fans of the artist is none other than bluesy Archy Marshall, also known as King Krule. With albums like 6 Feet Beneath The Moon, A New Place 2 Drown, and his most recent offering The Ooz, Krule could fare well in the UK with a collaboration along the lines of what Skepta was able to accomplish with the Swoosh. The Zoo Kid himself could get a pair that resembles something of a JD Sports collaboration/exclusive, which would resonate pretty well with fans of the young artist and trainers alike. Think like what Wale did with Villa in the US only overseas. What better way to go out and get ribs than with a pair of Archy Marshall’s?

Lil Uzi Vert

Next on the list of Influencers deserving a pair to represent their stylistic impact would be the enigmatic Lil Uzi Vert. After a slew of mixtapes and a gold charting debut album in Luv is Rage 2, the “XO Tour Llif3” rapper is ready to be endorsed by the major brands he so comfortably sports. Whether it be with the Three Stripes or Nike, Uzi has been on the cusp of snatching the title for the most stylish young artist in the music industry. After having an album cover designed by
Off-White and being seeded some of the most coveted pairs of the Virgil Abloh x Nike collaboration, Uzi is ready to take it vertical. With major brand backing — perhaps that of Off-White itself — the rapper with the most stage presence not named Travis Scott could now do what he really wants: stunt.

Solange

Solange has been on a tear artistically and style wise, and there aren’t many women in the industry or everyday life that could match her. With sold out shows at the Guggenheim and Radio City Music Hall, Solo has been ready to follow up her earliest endorsement with Puma. After seeing other performance artists like FKA Twigs and frequent collaborator Dev Hynes getting their just due from the likes of Nike and Adidas respectively, it’s a toss up with who could be the most fitting outfitter for the “MAD” and “F.U.B.U.” songstress. It’s about time for Solange to get another seat at the Influencers table in my opinion, and what better brand to outfit her head-to-toe than adidas?

Beyoncé

What better way to end an opinion piece about Influencers ready for endorsement than Ms. Ivy Park herself, Queen Beyoncé. After a career that rivals some of the greatest entertainers ever, Beyoncé is more than ready to be outfitted by a brand like Nike, specifically NikeLab. Pair her star power with the innovation of NikeLab and give Ivy Park the same backing that the YEEZY imprint has gotten from adi and watch the brands simultaneously flourish. Just think about the great strides that Rihanna’s Fenty line has made with Puma and imagine the platform that Nike could provide for Bey. It’ll definitely be one that won’t plateau. It’s a party indeed.

This adidas Ultra Boost Black/Gold Sample Should Definitely Release

As the adidas Ultra Boost persists in growing popularity, our hope is that the silhouette continues to stretch its creative wings as far as possible.

This sample in black and gold is along the lines of what we’d like to see more of. Blacked-out Primeknit construction flows untapped throughout the upper while a gold heel counter provides the ideal accent. Boost cushioning rest below and, of course, a Continental outer below that.

There is no indication that the Three Stripes plans to release the adidas Ultra Boost Black/Gold. But here’s to hoping that they do.

Hello GQ, I am currently an undergrad student at the University of Kansas. I scored an interview for next week as an IT intern. I have never owned a suit before and now would be a reasonable time to get one. Where should I shop for a nice quality suit with a typical budget as a college student?

We really love Suit Supply.
