Nicki Minaj Will Reign Over The 2018 VMAs With A Queenly Performance

Bow down, Barbz. Just days after dropping her long-awaited fourth album, Queen, Nicki Minaj will hit the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards for a special remote performance, presented by PEPSI, that’s sure to be epic.

How do we know? Because Nicki’s given us precisely that no fewer than six times this decade. The rapper made her VMA debut in 2010, performing on the pre-show red carpet, and she’s since hit the main stage five times, busting out “Anaconda” in 2014 and “Trini Dem Girls” in 2015, just to name a couple.

Minaj’s two most recent VMA performances have seen her sharing the stage — she joined Ariana Grande for “Side to Side” in 2016 and Katy Perry for “Swish Swish” last year — but this time, the queen is ridin’ solo. Or, who knows, maybe she’ll have a surprise up her sleeve. It’s the VMAs, so anything could happen!

Not only is Minaj performing at the August 20 bash — from a secret, iconic location in New York — but she’s also looking to take home her fourth Moon Person. The Queen MC’s futuristic “Chun-Li” is nominated for Best Hip-Hop Video.

Minaj joins a star-studded roster of artists performing at the 2018 VMAs, including Travis Scott, Post Malone, Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, Logic with Ryan Tedder, and this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard recipient, Jennifer Lopez. And we’re not even done rolling out the announcements…

The 2018 MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Radio City Music Hall on Monday, August 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Voting is now open at vma.mtv.com!

Meek Mill’s Powerful ‘Stay Woke’ Performance Doubled As A Tribute To Two Fallen Rappers

Since his release, Meek Mill has been on a quest to fight for criminal justice reform. Last night (June 24), the Philadelphia rapper took the battle one step further with the moving debut of his new song “Stay Woke” featuring Miguel at the 2018 BET Awards.

Mill began the performance rapping in a Philadelphia street as chaos unfolds around him. Over the course of the four-minute song, police officers arrest a group of black men in the street, a stray bullet kills a young girl, and Meek is surrounded by incarcerated men of color.

One of the most striking features of Mill’s performance was his wardrobe. The “1942 Flows” rapper was clad in a hoodie that paid tribute to XXXTentacion and Jimmy Wopo, two rappers that were both killed on last week (June 18). The lyrics of the song also shed light on Mill’s thoughts about hip-hop’s current generation. Meek starts the second verse off rapping, “Picture me ten years younger with some tats on my face / Taking a bunch of Xannys with the strap on my waist / Pointing at the camera like mama ain’t teach me manners.” He goes on to state that he “can’t judge” rappers like X and Wopo, but is merely trying to “understand them.”

Ever since Meek was released from prison, he’s been vocal about the injustice and inequities that first put him in the system and the decade-plus fight to get him out. In an interview with Lester Holt of Dateline NBC, Mill was direct about his current predicament.

“I don’t feel free, Mill said. “I ain’t feel free since I caught this case at the age of 19. I’m 30 now.”

Unfortunately, Judge Genece Brinkley did not immediately grant Meek and his attorneys a new trial after they presented evidence questioning the credibility of one of the officer’s involved in his original arrest, reports Billboard. The judge stated that she would rule in “due time.”

BROCKHAMPTON Return From Brief Hiatus With Emotional ‘Tonya’ Performance

BROCKHAMPTON’s June 20 performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon was always going to have a dark cloud hanging over it. It marked not only their first late-night performance, but also their first public appearance since the group parted ways with Ameer Vann amid sexual misconduct allegations.

The group took the opportunity to perform “Tonya” featuring Jazmine Sullivan, serpentwithfeet, and Ryan Beatty. The BROCKHAMPTON members sat on the floor with crossed legs and wore coordinating flannels as a screen behind them played a video of boys playing at the beach. The metaphor of innocence and reminiscing about better times was powerful, albeit not subtle.

One of the more eye-opening moments of the performance came from Kevin Abstract. During his candid verse, the band’s leader potentially alluded to the Ameer controversy, rapping, “I’ve been in my feelings on an island in the dirt / I feel like brothers lie just so my feelings don’t get hurt / I said, I’ll try vacationin’ / I’ll try to run away.” Abstract’s lyrics are similar to a press release issued from the group which stated, “We were lied to, and we’re sorry for not speaking up sooner.”

The performance was also notable because it revealed that the group changed the name of their album from Puppy to The Best Years of Our Lives. It hasn’t been announced when BROCKHAMPTON will release their next album, but it does look like they are returning to the stage, according to Consequence of Sound.

Childish Gambino Surprising Students With A Performance Of ‘This Is America’ Gives Us All The Feels

Donald Glover and Chance the Rapper just proved that “The Worst Guys” can also be the best guys. Yesterday (June 11), Glover surprised a room full of Chicago youth at OpenMike by performing Childish Gambino’s “This Is America.” As social video reveals, as the beat to the song started playing, the auditorium erupted as students rushed to the stage, while Gambino broke out his signature dance from the video.

Glover and Chance’s relationship goes way back. The Chicago rapper opened up for Childish Gambino early in both of their careers and even teased fans with the possibility of a joint mixtape. Chance, along with the poet and activist Malcolm London, host OpenMike, which is a monthly event where Chicago high school students can present artwork to their peers and receive professional development. The monthly event honors “Brother Mike” Hawkins, who helped artists like Chance, Vic Mensa, and Saba first get their start at the YouMedia Lyricist Loft event.

Last week, FX announced that they ordered a third season of Atlanta. At an Emmys FYC screening and panel on Friday (June 8), Glover compared the upcoming season of Atlanta to one of Kanye West’s most successful albums.

“I align the seasons I think, to me, like Kanye records,” Glover told IndieWire. “I feel like this is our Graduation. This is probably our most accessible but also the realest — an honest version of it — and I feel like the most enjoyable, like the third album.”

Upcoming Nike Kyrie 4 is Inspired by His Memorable Finals Performance

The Cleveland Cavaliers 2016 NBA Finals comeback is one of legend. No team has ever emerged victorious in a Finals facing a 3-1 deficit. The Cavs did due in large part of LeBron James and Kyrie Irving. Irving, now a Celtic, had a performance in that Finals that made him the superstar he is today.

His 41-point outburst in Game 5 of the series helped the Cavs get over the hump, giving them the confidence and poise they needed to close out the Golden State Warriors. This upcoming Nike Kyrie 4 honors that towering performance in black and crimson shades with what appears to be bricks at the heel, symbolizing Irving’s ability to put missed shots behind him and thrive beyond the shots that didn’t fall.

Take a closer look at the Nike Kyrie 4 “41 for the Ages” on April 14.

Logic Calls Out Trump’s ‘Shithole Countries’ Line In Impassioned Grammy Performance

Following his powerful performance of “1-800-273-8255” at the VMAs last year, Logic delivered yet another show-stopping moment at the Grammys on Sunday night (January 28).

With Alessia Cara and Khalid by his side, the rapper performed his suicide prevention anthem with stunning poignancy and emotion. Once again, he was surrounded by suicide attempt survivors and loss survivors, and the screens behind him lit up with the song’s title, named after the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. At the end of the song, Logic launched into a fiery speech that urged the crowd to “stand and fight for those who are not weak, but have yet to discover the strength that the evil of this world has done its best to conceal.”

He continued, “On behalf of those who fight for equality in a world that is not equal, not just, and not ready for the change we are here to bring, I say unto you, bring us your tired, your poor, and any immigrant who seeks refuge. For together, we can build not just a better country, but a world that is destined to be united.”

Following his performance, Logic shared a photo of the print-out of his speech on Twitter. Notably, he wrote “NOT SHITHOLES” in big, bold letters to describe “beautiful countries filled with culture, diversity, and thousands of years of history.” His word choice was bleeped on the CBS telecast, but it’s vital that he got the message across: one that clearly calls out President Trump’s recent comments about immigrants.

“1-800-273-8255” lost both categories it was nominated for this year — Song of the Year and Best Music Video — but it’s performances like these that prove its remarkable impact.

Did Migos Take Inspiration From Kim and Kanye’s Wedding For Their Latest Performance?

Offset might not be planning his wedding to Cardi B yet, but it seems like he’s being influenced by other famous nuptials. Last night (January 25), Migos appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and performed their Pharrell-produced song “Stir Fry” in front of a wall full of white roses. The scenery is very similar to the wedding of a producer that features on Culture II.

For those that don’t remember, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were married in front of a wall of white flowers in 2014. The estimated cost of the extravagant flowers is $ 136,000. If Migos spent that much on their Tonight Show performance, it would go down as the baddest and boujeeist flex the show has seen in its 64-year existence.

Culture II at a whopping 24 tracks, is out now and features Drake, Travis Scott, and 21 Savage among other star-studded guest appearances.
