Nike Air Max 1 Obsidian/Pure Platinum // Release Date

After a retro release of the OG Air Max 1 “Obsidian” back in December, Nike is offering up a new take on the original style with a few slight deviations.

Removed from red accents altogether in place of Pure Platinum, there is clear representation of the “Obsidian” pair here yet we’re looking at something totally different. Maybe it’s a ringer for those that missed out on the retro? Or maybe its just another great pairs of Air Max 1s?

No matter the answer to that question, grab a pair on March 11 when they release at Sneakersnstuff.

Patta and Nike Produce Friends and Family Air Span II Collaboration

Amsterdam-based retailer Patta has worked alongside Nike several times in the past. The two have partnered to produce striking iterations of the Air Max 1, Cortez, and more to great success. Now they turn their attention to the ’90s centric Air Span II that is previewed for the first time today.

This friends and family release is subtle in nature given its white, grey and black palette. Lively pops of orange are sprinkled throughout the silhouette while Patta branding appears dead center at the shoes tongue. To close, the collaboration is finished with a special-edition “Publicity, Publicity, Wohooooow” box designed by Linda van Deursen.

LeBron Rocks Nike Air Force 1 “More Than An Athlete” Makers Custom Before All-Star Game

Still incensed by the comments Fox News’ Laura Ingraham made about him, Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James sent a direct shot to her choice words with his choice of footwear before the 2018 NBA All-Star Game on Sunday.

Wanting to let Ingraham and his other critics know that he won’t “shut up and dribble,” James wore a custom pair of Nike Air Force 1 that had “More Than An Athlete” written one one side, deriving from the 90/10 custom creations from Nike’s Makers of the Game space in LA.

Nike Air Garnett // Throwback Thursday

KG. KGEE. KGEE21. KG21. The Big Ticket. Da Kid. KG PICK 5.

No matter the acronym, they’re all synonymous with the man for whom they were coined: Kevin Garnett.

Welcome to today’s Nice Kicks Throwback Thursday. Here, we continue with our NBA All-Star Game theme and pay tribute to yet another mid-90s basketball model worn on court during the annual February basketball classic: the 1998 Nike Air Garnett.

KG took the NBA by storm when, as a tall, skinny kid from Mauldin, South Carolina by way of Chicago’s Farragut Academy, he single-handedly transformed a struggling Minnesota Timberwolves basketball franchise in desperate need of a new identity and leader.

Minnesota’s mid-90s mighty underdog, KG’s career is equally extensive and noteworthy as his Nike kicksology. The 2008 NBA Champion, 2004 NBA MVP, 2008 Defensive Player of the Year, 15x NBA-All Star, 2003 NBA ASG MVP, and 2000 Olympic Gold medalist was properly laced by Nike during the earlier part of his legendary career including models such as the Air Jordan 11, Air Zoom Flight, Air Max Uptempo, Air Max Uptempo 3, Air Way Up, Jumpman Pro, Air Flight Max, Air Max Uptempo 3.0, Air Vis Zoom Uptempo, and Jumpman Team.

It wasn’t until 1998, however, when KG finally received his very own Nike signature line with the debut of the Air Garnett, his footwear of choice at the 1998 NBA All-Star Game in NYC, his All-Star Game debut. In the showcase, KG scored 12 points and handed out 2 assists in the game including a gorgeous alley-oop pass to Kobe who finished with an emphatic slam dunk, much to the delight of NBA on NBC commentators Bob Costas and Isiah Thomas.

The Air Garnett truly embodied and captured KG’s spirit, essence, and style vis-a-vis excellent aesthetics and the use of high-quality materials and construction. Featuring the words “Kevin Garnett” on the heel tab, the shoe incorporated a thick tumbled leather upper, phylon midsole, jewel technology, and visible heel with encapsulated forefoot air sole units.

Multiple colorways released including black/varsity royal-metallic silver, white/midnight navy-field green (emerald) colorway, and a rare all-black PE colorway as well. Of note, KG’s PE version featured his number 21 on the tongue in place of the word “Air.”

Unfortunately, due to legal issues pertaining to the use of his name on the heel tab, the Air Garnett has not been given the retro treatment and likely never will.

Perhaps one day, Nike will produce a quality retro and return this pair to the hardwood where it so rightfully belongs.

Remember: anything is possible, and always keep it fly as hell.

Nike Launches LeBron Watch Program

Nike tonight launches the LeBron Watch Program — a new initiative that follows James as he unveils PE iterations of the LeBron 15 inspired by iconic Nike athletes and the many Swoosh classics that they’ve worn. The King kicked off the program tonight by lacing up the Nike LeBron 15 “Waffle,” a sneaker inspired by the time-honored Nike Waffle Trainer from 1972.

James, a sports aficionado and sneaker fiend like many of us, grew up in the ’90s watching his favorite Swoosh athletes dominate their respective eras in signature styles and more. He odes their greatness with this innovative new program. And, what’s even more exciting, many of them will be up for grabs.

Now some of James’ new PEs he’ll keep to himself, but he’ll also make five of these PEs available to Nike members through Nike SNKRS. The shoes will be available as soon as he steps on the floor wearing them. Pretty cool, right?

“When I was a kid, the athletes and the shoes represented in this series inspired me to chase my dream of one day becoming a professional athlete,” recalls James. “It’s important to me to share these stories and inspiration with my fans. I want them to be a part of every step of my journey, so I’m excited we’re making these shoes available to them.”
