HYPEBEAST Tested Microsoft’s “How Old Do I Look?” App with 15 Usual Suspects

“The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist,” says con man Kint, who was played by Kevin Spacey in 1995 crime thriller The Usual Suspects. The quote is a nod at the idea that we often refuse to admit that there’s evil around us, acting as we please with little regard for consequences. While “evil” might be a strong word to describe vanity, there’s no denying that some go to great length to achieve their idea of perfection. Coincidentally, one of the greatest tricks the human ever pulled was to fool the world about his age. With all the cosmetic surgery available, this trick isn’t exactly hard to pull off. Thankfully a large part of the world still veers away from such narcissistic practices, preferring to opt for the word “wise” rather than “old.” Yet, the thought still lingers in the back of our heads, “how old do I come across?”

Adding to the pool of distractions on the Internet is “How Old Do I Look,” an app designed by Microsoft that guesses your age after analysing 27 points on your face. The app admittedly states that it is still under construction so the accuracy could differ. Understanding the variables, we tested the app with some of the most recognizable faces in fashion, music and pop culture. Rallying up a slew of usual suspects from our latest HYPEBEAST 100s list, along with a few special candidates, we learnt that in some instances — such as Lev Tanju, Ronnie Fieg, and Pharrell Williams — the app was either spot on or missing the age by one year. Ricardo Tisci, Virgil Abloh and Gigi Hadid were marked up a few years perhaps due to their nasolabial folds, but not at the whopping gap of 16 years, as it appeared for HBA creative director Shayne Oliver. He was said to be 42, but in fact is 26. Adrianne Ho would be pleased to know that she’s been given four years head start, and Hiroshi Fujiwara — a striking 21 years.  After decades of recreational cannabis use, Snoop Dogg’s heavy eye-bags and overall droopy look has earned him +10 years, while the gorgeous Bruce Jenner knocked a decade off his seniority, a glitch in part thanks to the reconstructive surgery he’s acquired .

Check the line-up above and let us know how far off you think these estimations are. Head over to “How Old Do I Look” and try out the app to see how well Microsoft knows you.

HYPEBEAST Giveaway: O’Neill x Pendleton 2014 Fall Capsule Collection

For our latest contest, we have teamed up with pioneering North American brands, O’Neill and Pendleton, to give away their collaborative offering designed specifically for the fall season. Initially unveiled back in September with this video lookbook, the capsule collection pairs two longstanding clothiers from two different walks of life. While Pendleton was birthed to combat the unique mix of climates in the Pacific Northwest, the California-based surfwear brand O’Neill is credited with developing the original wetsuit. In the end, the two came together to offer six versatile pieces (click each link to see the item); a parka that combines Pendleton wool with O’Neill’s HYPERDRY technology, a plaid shirt inspired by the “beach boys” of the ’60s as seen on O’Neill Global brand ambassador Jeremy Jones, a slim-fit crewneck sweatshirt, a casual T-shirt with Penwool panels, a Penwool-adorned backpack and a matching cap to complete the set.

HYPEBEAST Spaces: The Porsche Museum

Having opened its doors early 2009, the Delugan Meissl-designed Porsche Museum was built with the intentions of educating and inspiring visitors by virtue of the automotive manufacturer’s 80-plus years of history, and with the help of some of the most beautifully-designed sports cars of our time. Sitting on three large V-shaped columns, the colossal 5,600 square-metre building offers the illusion of floating and was designed to attract visitors in a welcoming manner. The Porsche Museum is comprised of four main sectors; The Museum on Wheels, an ever-changing exhibition that sees a different focus on the various 520 models on hand; The Archive, 2,000 meters of shelf-space dedicated to the preserving of Porsche history; The Workshop, an open area where master craftsmen and mechanics work on the prized inventory; and finally, The Shop, a treasure trove to any enthusiast looking to take a bit of the Porsche brand back home with them. For those that have never had a chance to visit the museum, the video above should give you a better look at the ongoing commitments the brand has towards educating the public on its rich history.

Though its quirky exterior might make some mistake it for a new area of Universal Studios, Oakley’s futuristic-looking headquarters is the embodiment of everything the brand had envisioned. Behind its reinforced blast walls is a facility honoring all aspects of technology and invention with its steampunk interior, high-tech offices and a massive 400-seat amphitheatre described as a “sawmill on steroids.” In this edition of Spaces CEO Colin Baden, talks about how the site started as a private residence project with brand founder James Jannard before evolving into the complex it is today.
