Kodak Black Is Reportedly Getting Out Of Jail Early

Kodak Black’s jail sentence is reportedly being shortened. According to Pitchfork, Bill K. Kapri, better known as Kodak, is expected to be released from jail on August 18. His lawyer previously told the publication that the Florida rapper would be out of jail by September 17.

In January, Kodak was arrested by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and faced seven charges, including grand theft of a firearm, neglect of a child without great bodily harm, and two charges of probation violation or community control/felony. In April, the felony charges were dropped, but Black was sentenced to 364 days in jail for probation charges of driving with a suspended license and associating with people engaged in criminal activity. However, he was granted credit for time served.

Although he will be released soon, Kodak’s legal troubles aren’t entirely over. In a separate case, Kodak Black was indicted on sexual assault charges where he was accused of sexually attacking a woman in Florence County, South Carolina in 2016.

If Rae Sremmurd Have It Their Way We’re Getting A Childish Gambino Collab Album

Fans are still waiting on the long-delayed Childish Gambino and Chance the Rapper mixtape, and now Rae Sremmurd are throwing their hat into the collaboration ring. In an interview with Billboard, the rap group described the potential sound of a Sremmurd and Donald Glover project.

“I got a laptop with about 1,000 bangers,” said Swae Lee. “I know Childish Gambino got about 2,000 or 3,000, who knows? We’re gonna come together and make a whole project like, “Redbone” and “Black Beatles.”

This week, Glover announced he is embarking on a North American tour with Rae Sremmurd starting in September. Later in the Billboard interview, Slim Jxmmi reveals how the two brothers connected with the Atlanta rapper.

“Childish Gambino is a cool guy, we linked overseas in a studio,” said Jxmmi. “I DJ’d one of his house parties one time. He’s just a cool guy and we got the same type of vibe, so you can expect good music to come out of this. It’s natural. We don’t gotta act, we can just be ourselves. He’s himself everywhere he goes, and we’re gonna be ourselves everywhere we go — so it’s just gonna be like two different shows, we from two different places.”

At this point it looks like Glover might have to put off retirement to fit in all of these projects.

Gucci Mane Is Officially Getting A Biopic

One of the most influential rappers of the last decade is finally getting the biopic he deserves. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Autobiography of Gucci Mane is being turned into a movie. Paramount Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are coming together to adapt The New York Times bestseller to the big screen.

In September, Gucci Mane sat down with MTV News correspondent Gaby Wilson to discuss what inspired him to write an autobiography.

“My engineer suggested it, you know, when I was away. And then it was just something I guess to kill time. When you’re in prison, you don’t got nothing but time. You know what I’m saying? I just reflect on my life, and I just started writing. Next thing I know, 30-40 pages was down, and I was off and going.”

Later, Gucci revealed what he learned about himself during the writing process.

“I learned that I can be more than a rapper. I learned that I really feel I have a future in writing books if I wanted to do that.”

The only question that remains is who will play Radric Delantic Davis? Will Gucci pull an Eminem in 8 Mile and play a version of himself, or will an unknown with a heart of Guwop gold mesmerize us?

NK Conversation // Are You Getting Tired Of Theme Colorways?

McFly Hyperdunk

words // Nick DePaula:

Back in 2008, there was a phenomenon taking over basketball sneakers. Thanks to the “McFly” Hyperdunk, an entirely new era for footwear was upon us.

Themed sneakers.

Larry-Bird-Magic-Johnson-Converse-WeaponPrior to that, signature sneakers followed a fairly standard formula: The player’s namesake shoe featured the colors of the player’s team. It was a formulaic but basic principle that footwear had followed pretty much since the days of Magic and Bird’s dueling Weapons. Of course, there were three or four colorways of a signature shoe that released per year.

Then the “McFly” Hyperdunk happened. Then “South Beach.” Then “NERF,” “Brenda,” “What The” and so much more. Everything began to have a story even a red shoe for a guy on the Bulls, or a yellow shoe for a guy on the Lakers.

Just a few years ago, a friend at Nike summed it up perfectly when I asked about the shift in approach.

“Less team. More theme.”

Now that it’s actually 2015, has the themed approach by sneaker brands looking to tell stories about the lives, triumphs and greatest accomplishments of their signature athletes ran its course? Would you rather see more straightforward and clean colorways instead of having a graphic on every release?

It’s not enough to celebrate KD’s love for the Oklahoma City Thunder or his home state of Maryland — this year we saw a sneaker that literally had Peanut Butter & Jelly on the side of the shoe. Because KD loved PB &J as a kid.

That might be an extreme example of just how far reaching some of the themed stories have become these days, and it’s definitely worth pointing out that the KD 7 “PB & J” was only released in kid’s sizes, but as brands continue to expand the number of colorways they’re dropping for each player, where do you draw the line on what makes for a good story?
