Mac Miller Fans Held a Beautiful Hometown Vigil In Blue Slide Park

Mac Miller got a touching hometown send-off on Tuesday night (September 11) at Pittsburgh’s Frick Park, where thousands of fans attended a vigil for the late rapper.

The location was chosen for its significance to Miller: His 2011 debut album was named after the park’s playground, known as Blue Slide Park, located just a couple blocks from the high school he went to. Miller spoke about the park in a 2012 interview with MTV News, saying, “No matter what happens in life, no matter where you go, where you’re off to, what happens with the park, that slide will always be blue. That will always be Blue Slide Park, no matter what.”

On Tuesday morning, Pittsburgh Public Works applied a fresh coat of blue paint on the famous slide, and fans gathered around it that evening, filling the playground with flowers, candles, artwork, and Steelers jerseys. According to local reports, a petition was even passed around to request that the name of the playground be changed to “Mac Miller Blue Slide Park.”

Miller’s grandmother Marcia Weiss was on hand at the vigil (wearing a Blue Slide Park album art sweatshirt) and thanked the crowd for giving her grandson a beautiful tribute. “Everybody, he would be so excited, he wished he was here and I wish he was here,” she said. “But he loves you all, he loves Pittsburgh and everything that you have done for him. Thank you so much for everybody being here. You were wonderful.”

Miller passed away on September 7 of a reported overdose and was pronounced dead at his home in Los Angeles. He was 26 years old. See more photos and videos from the vigil below.

Kendrick Lamar Explains Why White Fans Shouldn’t Say The ‘N-Word’ At His Concerts

Being a rapper is awkward. There is a constant threat of beef, the tendency to have to exude toxic masculinity out of every orifice, and more often than not, white fans screaming the “N-word” back at you in concert. Kendrick Lamar, in his latest Vanity Fair profile, discussed a May incident where a white fan was brought onstage to help with “m.A.A.d. City,” but couldn’t find the decency to censor one word.

“Let me put it to you in its simplest form,” Lamar said. “I’ve been on this earth for 30 years, and there’s been so many things a Caucasian person said I couldn’t do. Get good credit. Buy a house in an urban city. So many things — ‘you can’t do that’ — whether it’s from afar or close up. So if I say this is my word, let me have this one word, please let me have that word.”

On a more positive note, Kendrick also opened up about what it was like for DAMN. to be the first non-classical or jazz album to win a Pulitzer Prize.

“It was one of those things I heard about in school, but I never thought I’d be a part of it,” he said. “I thought, to be recognized in an academic world…whoa, this thing really can take me above and beyond. It’s one of those things that should have happened with hip-hop a long time ago. It took a long time for people to embrace us — people outside of our community, our culture — to see this not just as vocal lyrics, but to see that this is really pain, this is really hurt, this is really true stories of our lives on wax.”

Here’s Why Fans Think Meek Mill And Drake Are Working Together Again

Looks like all beef isn’t forever. Meek Mill teased an unreleased song on social media this week, and many people believe it is hinting at a collaboration with onetime rival Drake. Over what sounds like a sample of The Notorious B.I.G.’s “What’s Beef,” Meek raps, “Is we beefing or rapping? / I might just pop up with Drizzy like…” Many fans are convinced that the “yeah” voice at the end of Meek’s line sounds very similar to the OVO head honcho’s.

Tension between Meek and Drake started rising in July 2015, when the Philadelphia rapper claimed that Graham employed a ghostwriter. Reference tracks by Quentin Miller for various If You’re Reading This Its Too Late tracks leaked. Drake then dropped “Charged Up” and “Back to Back,” sealing Meek’s internet coffin on the infamous OVO Fest meme screen. All in all, the entire debacle was messy.

In November 2017, Drake sent a positive message to Meek at the Melbourne, Australia stop of his Boy Meets World Tour. At the time, Mill was still incarcerated.

“I see you with the Adidas three-stripe,” Graham said. I see you got the ‘Free Meek Mill’ t-shirt. Free Meek Mill too, man. You right.”

Meek co-signed Drizzy’s olive branch when asked about the gesture earlier this month on The Breakfast Club after his release.

“He put good energy in the air,” Mill said. “What happened, happened. We moved past that, and I think we’ll have a conversation next time when we see each other and get it going. Keep it moving in life.”

Hopefully, “get it going” means the “R.I.C.O.” artists are back to making music together. We can all say “Amen” to that.

Fans Think Nicki Minaj Is Dating Eminem After Her ‘Big Banks’ Verse

Nicki Minaj loves her punchlines, and her latest one is either an expert troll or… yeah, it has to be trolling. Today (May 25), YG released “Big Banks” featuring Minaj, 2 Chainz, and Big Sean. The subject matter of the Mustard-produced song is all there in the title, but it’s Nicki who goes slightly off topic. During her verse, she spits, “Back to back Maybach, stack the Ms / Told ‘em I met Slim Shady, bag the M / Once he go black, he’ll be back again.”

When a fan asked Nicki on Instagram if she was dating Eminem, she replied with a simple, “Yes.” However, the Queens rapper is known to joke around with her fans, especially on social media.

Could a Nicki and Em union potentially work? In an infamous 2017 Vulture interview, Eminem shared that he was on Tinder and discussed how the dating world is treating him.

“It’s tough,” Mathers said. “Since my divorce I’ve had a few dates and nothing’s panned out in a way that I wanted to make it public. Dating’s just not where I’m at lately.”

The Barbz have had a particularly stressful week after the “Chun-Li” rapper announced she was pushing back her album Queen. Depending on how much you ship Slim Shady and Minaj, this is great news.

Fans Are Convinced J. Cole Is Taking Shots At Lil Pump On ‘1985’

J. Cole is 33. Lil Pump is 17. In hip-hop, that age difference might as well be a chasm as big as the Grand Canyon. Today (April 20), J. Cole dropped his fifth studio album, KOD. The project finds Cole taking a satirical look at modern hip-hop and the drugs, money, and materialism he feels fuels it. “1985 – Intro To ‘The Fall Off’” is one of the more pointed and antagonistic tracks, which finds the Fayetteville MC targeting an unnamed rapper who fans have determined is Lil Pump or maybe Smokepurpp.

During the track, J. Cole takes various pointed jabs. The beginning of his verse starts with the observation, “I’m fuckin’ with your funky lil’ rap name / I hear your music and I know that rap’s changed / A bunch of folks would say that that’s a bad thing / ‘Cause everything’s commercial and it’s pop now.”

Pump and Purpp have made it their mission to mess with J. Cole in a variety of ways. In April 2017, a song titled “Fuck J. Cole,” reportedly by Lil Pump made its way to the internet. Earlier this week, Smokepurpp joked that he had a standout feature on Cole’s album. In a January interview with Montreality, Smokepurpp referenced his trolling of the North Carolina rapper.

“Nowadays everything is kind of a troll,” Purpp said. “So people do know that [J. Cole tweets] its trolling, but if you don’t like we don’t care. Pump doesn’t care.”

Cole’s indictment of rap’s new generation speaks to some of Purpp’s assessment of the “OG-versus-new rapper” debate. Toward the middle of his verse the bars get more acidic as he raps, “They wanna see you dab, they wanna see you pop a pill / They wanna see you tatted from your face to your heels / And somewhere deep down, fuck it, I gotta keep it real / They wanna be black and think your song is how it feels.”

“1985″ isn’t the first time Cole has been critical of the rap landscape. On “Everybody Dies” many thought he took aim at Kanye, Lil Uzi Vert, and Lil Yachty. With lines like, “Bunch of words and ain’t sayin’ shit, I hate these rappers / Especially the amateur eight week rappers / Lil’ whatever – just another short bus rapper,” it isn’t hard to see why.

The recipient of Cole’s message may not be confirmed by the rapper. However, the message for the hip-hop community is coming through loud and clear.

For his next tour, Big Sean is jogging fans’ memories and serving up an “unfriendly reminder” that he’s a decade deep in the rap game.

On Wednesday (February 7), Sean announced his Unfriendly Reminder Tour, a 31-city North American jaunt with special guests Playboi Carti, Shy Glizzy, and GASHI. In a cool twist, the Detroit rapper is taking a whole new approach to the outing by opening up his catalog and letting fans pick his setlists.

“Before I step into this new chapter of music, I was really sitting and reflecting on the past ten years and all we’ve accomplished,” he wrote on Instagram, accompanied by a throwback-heavy tour trailer. “I had to go back in and listen to all the old mixtapes and albums, and I was like damn man a lot of this stuff didn’t get the true shine.”

He continued, “So with the platform I have now, I thought it would be perfect to revisit a lot of the old music as well as the new classics on my next tour. But I’m gonna give you guys the opportunity to chose my setlist on this tour. Can’t wait to hit the road.”

Ahead of each city’s tour date, fans will be able to cast votes on Sean’s website for the songs they want to see him perform. Also, in select cities, the available tour merch will be customizable, allowing fans to have a wholly unique concert experience.

Last year, Big Sean released two albums: I Decided and the Metro Boomin collab Double or Nothing.
