Xbox One X x Under Armour Curry 4 “More Power” VIP Kit // Closer Look

Working together, Under Armour and Microsoft have teamed up to uniquely celebrate the release of the Curry 4 and Xbox One X, which are both dropping on the same date. By combining forces, the two companies have created the Xbox One X x Under Armour Curry 4 “More Power” VIP Kit, which includes a matte black version of the gaming system and the Warriors superstar’s signature shoe.

This VIP iteration of the Curry 4 was customized by noted sneaker artist Mache Custom Kicks and features a matte black colorway that is accented by a metallic green circuitry design. UA and Curry branding as well as Xbox’s logo is prominently featured on the side. A complimentary colored white outsole completes the look of this special edition of Curry’s signature shoe.

Besides for the Curry 4, the VIP kit includes a similar themed Xbox One X console, a Xbox-themed suitcase and a host of other accessories like Xbox Staance socks. And while this all sounds amazing, the VIP kit was only given out to a small number of select recipients and unfortunately won’t be sold to the public.

A Closer Look at the Under Armour Curry 4

Under Armour just released Stephen Curry’s highly-anticipated fourth signature shoe, the aptly named Curry 4, today. Unlike the all-white colorway with a speckled gold midsole, the newest colorway is offered in black and white and an all-gray colorway featuring its signature mid-cut design with sock-like construction — a design which first appeared when Curry led the Golden State Warriors to victory in the 2017 NBA Finals.

The newest iteration was designed for more traction, comfort, and control. Cross-concentric circles on the outsole were created for more grip on any court surface, the sock-like construction and knit collar make for a snug fit, and the speed plate — which runs the full length of the shoe — provides stability throughout for quick cuts. Aesthetic details include a famous biblical verse — Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things” — that Steph writes on his shoes before each game.

Curry was heavily involved in the design process, working with Kort Neumann, Senior Design Manager, as the two were locked at the hip during most of the product development between athlete and designer. “It was designed from the ground up for Steph in mind. From the first conversation to sketches to design iteration, Steph was involved in every step of the way. He wanted continuity and that seamless feel between his foot and the shoe,” says Neumann.

Lonzo Ball Wears Under Armour Curry 4 PE

Lonzo Ball got people talking and social media fired up again tonight when he took the court wearing a never before seen PE of the Under Armour Curry 4.

Lonzo Ball wore the Nike Kobe AD during a triple-double performance followed by a game in Adidas Hardens.  Now a pair of Under Armours, it is pretty clear that Big Baller Brand does what they do best – getting people to talk.

What makes the moment even crazier is that the Curry 4 that he is wearing is a Player Exclusive that was made for Stephen Curry to wear in the 2017 NBA Finals but elected to wear a different color. One has to assume at this point that there is some involvement between the Big Baller camp and Under Armour for Lonzo to have his hands on this shoe.

Stephen Curry Honors Wife Ayesha With ‘Seasoned Life’ Under Armour 3ZER0 Release

words & images // Nick DePaula:

During yet another of his many, many endorsement meetings earlier this past fall, Golden State Warriors franchise guard Stephen Curry got to escape marketing talk for a brief moment at his Bay Area home, and slip back into husband life.

“One sec guys,” said Curry, as he looked to his buzzing iPhone.

For Curry’s closest friends and associates, the upward facing red-cased screen flashed an ever-familiar, if not quirky contact: “First Name Baesis”

As he’s done for well over a decade during their relationship, Stephen dropped everything. His wife Ayesha was simply calling to check in for the day, from across the country in New York after a promotional appearance event. It’s a habit that’s long been a daily routine, as the two are often separated throughout the ongoing NBA calendar.

Between Stephen and the Warriors’ rockstar-level road trips this season, and Ayesha’s budding career as a Food Network cooking show host and best-selling cookbook author, the two experienced the busiest of their six years of marriage, as both of their respective careers continue to explode.

With the annual Mother’s Day holiday on the horizon this weekend, Stephen was secretly working months ahead with his sponsor Under Armour to create a special edition pair of sneakers honoring Ayesha and her recent accomplishments.

Inspired by her best-selling cookbook The Seasoned Life, his newest shoe with the brand drafts off of Ayesha’s book cover colors, with extensive detailing found throughout.

The Curry 3ZER0 model features a light grey upper, with a sharp orange tongue and bright green outsole, pulling from the cover’s grass and the book spine’s hits of hues. There’s also gold accents throughout, incorporating a similar metallic treatment found on the book’s author text.

Within the hardbound’s 256 pages are a collection of Ayesha’s 100 favorite recipes, including everything from simple smoothies to more nuanced dinners and festive cocktails. A series of utensils and food icons are also incorporated in simplified graphic fashion onto the shoe’s sockliner, and there’s an illustration of her outfitted in a chef’s hat on the heel for good measure.

Through the clear bottom, you’ll find “The Seasoned Life” in its custom cursive font type, with “CHEF” and “CURRY” atop the midfoot support shanks, a play off of one of Stephen’s nicknames that’s more fitted for Ayesha.

Of her many culinary concoctions, Stephen’s favorite – chicken parmesan – was purposefully left out of the book. “I’m keeping that to myself,” Ayesha has often joked at promotional appearances.

Without any clarity earlier in the week on the upcoming schedule for the Western Conference Finals, Stephen opted to debut the “Seasoned Life” sneaker on Tuesday during the series-clinching fourth game against the Utah Jazz.

As it turns out, the Warriors will now face the San Antonio Spurs indeed on Mother’s Day, providing yet another chance for Curry to honor his wife on the court.

As for the 3ZER0 sneaker itself, the design is an update to Stephen’s regular season Curry 3 model, with some insights from last year’s playoffs helping to fuel the direction. The shoe was built to not only be lighter, but also includes a dynamic collar for added support.

“We wanted to take his shoe, and in designing for the postseason, we wanted to make it a lighter version,” says designer Kort Neumann. “We started with a marathon shoe, and now we’re building a racing spike or a race car for a 2-month time period.”

While Curry typically sticks to a pretty strict palette of Warriors colors on the court, the special edition “Seasoned Life” shoes are a first of its kind in honoring his wife, and might get another exception to be worn as Golden State plays host to San Antonio.

The shoes will fittingly be releasing on Under Armour’s UA.com website this Sunday on Mother’s Day morning, and available in a full range of sizes to also accommodate women.

Beyond the Numbers // The Curry 3 & Changing Times for Basketball Sneakers

Recently in an article published by ESPN’s Darren Rovell, Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank gave some very candid commentary on the lackluster sales of the Curry 3, which follow up the sensational seasons and upward wave created by Steph and his play in the Curry 1 and 2, respectively. The commentary from Plank came from Under Armour’s company earnings call, with the company reporting its first quarterly loss as a public company.

“Our success in basketball hasn’t been without its learning,” Plank expressed in the call. “As we launched the Curry 3 late last year, our expectations continued to run high. And while the 3 played very well on court for Stephen Curry and our athletes, a sluggish signature market and a warm consumer reception led to softer-than-expected results.”

While Plank is attempting to ease the anxieties of likely worried investors, what he’s saying is far from a fib. Though no longer the talk of the town as he shares the spotlight, Steph is still putting up incredibly strong numbers and his fair share of highlights. On top of that, anybody who’s hooped in the Curry 3 can attest that they play well — this writer and many of his peers included both IRL and online.

True, the Curry 3 hasn’t made waves at retail, but in reality it’s overall sales volume has been near that of the Curry 2 — they just made way more pairs. Around the way, many of the other signature basketball shoes on the market have been far quieter than years priors. How so? This season, Nike dropped the starting retail prices drastically on LeBron, KD and Kobe models, forecasting a shift that had already affected them and the rest of the market. Though critically accepted, the KD 9 would still see discounts, while the LeBron 14 would receive the least amount of marketing or push seen on a King James signature ever. Just the same, the typically tech savvy Kobe line would trim performance features and price, also getting discounted not long after launch.

What’s this mean? Not much really, as performance basketball shoes have always been made for the masses and even the most coveted colorways in retro life were once discounted in OG life form.

While MVP candidate-backed shoes like the adidas Harden Vol 1 and Air Jordan XXX1 seem to be doing reasonably well at retail, it still seems price is as big of a catalyst for success as play. Perhaps the biggest takeaway on today’s basketball market in regards to sales is that the Kyrie 2 was the only modern hoop shoe that cracked 2016’s Top 10 Best Sellers List. That was likely much in part because it retailed for less than that of Curry, Kobe, Kyrie or LeBron — though crossover appeal (no pun intended) and strong storytelling and ‘newness’ certainly helped. Kyrie was also top of mind from a moment standpoint, nailing the most memorable shot from this past spring’s NBA Finals.

While the energy Nike created with launches like the “South Beach” LeBron 8, “Grinch” Kobe 6 and countless other colorways after shifted the market to making modern basketball shoes into more lifestyle shoes, this was never quite sustainable. As we’ve seen in recent years, the colorways really have become endless.

What did shift over that same time however was consumer response to a shoe going on sale. A price drop — which was once awesome — suddenly made some shoes undesirable. That’s somewhat fair, everyone wants want they can’t have, and don’t want what they easily can have. More on the mark though when speaking to a mass market product like a basketball shoe, it’s hard to be limited cool and commercially viable at the same time. Somehow though, Nike mastered it for the better part of this for almost over decade, and Under Armour struck gold adopting this same format during sensational seasons for Steph.

As performance basketball shoes continue to become less desirable in the lifestyle market and running takes the cake, it’s clear Nike and Jordan have already started shifting their pricing policy. Plank notes that Under Amour will do the same, as the Curry 3ZER0 retails at $ 120, compared to the $ 140 mark of the Curry 3. Stephen’s latest shoe is already well outpacing the 3 in sell-thru percentages.

In addition, Plank also stated that Under Armour will be sharper regarding future shoe launches, “with respect to number of color offerings, scarcity, exclusivity and cadence of launches to drive more consistent engagement and results,” as reported by ESPN. The article also notes that “nearly 80 percent of the people who wear basketball shoes do so for fashion” and addresses the trend that lower-profile shoes are more popular, which we would translate both on court and off. You can attribute this to Kobe, you can attribute this to running models reigning in sneaker culture, or you can attribute it to joggers shifting fashion. Either way, times change and so do trends.

Like any trend though, the upcoming result could be good for a core consumer that isn’t swayed by sales — the actual hoopers. While signature shoes built for basketball have somewhat suffered due to chasing denim and gaining weight, it may be time for a new wave of performance product that’s all about play. If there’s one thing Under Armour is good at, it’s focusing on competition and caring less about crossover. If there’s one thing Nike reigns at, it’s innovation. As adidas and Jordan Brand duke it out for MVP honors this summer, here’s to hoping the Curry 4, Harden Vol 2, LeBron 15 and AJ XXX2 are all hoop and no hype.

Exclusive // Stephen Curry’s “Dubfetti” Under Armour Curry 3 Birthday PE

words & images // Nick DePaula:

For the fourth straight season, Under Armour Basketball has created a special edition sneaker for Stephen Curry to honor his March 14th birthday, building on the string of birthday cake themed sneakers that we’ve come to expect on an annual basis.

This year’s Curry 3 celebrates Stephen turning 29 today, with an even more bold and loud take on the sweet mix of sprinkles, spongecake and frosting that’ve helped to inspired his birthday shoe hues and textures along the way. In classic low-key Curry fashion, when asked earlier about his birthday wishes, Stephen said he was simply hoping to play some golf and enjoy a family dinner at Benihana.

Curry is currently taking on the 76ers on NBATV’s “Fan Night” game in his special birthday pair. With a taxi yellow Threadborne mesh upper and electric blue Anafoam along the collar and medial side, the shoe is also accented by a white synthetic overlay that features cake frosting-inspired sprinkles that seep over onto the midsole.

As we’ve seen with several other exclusives made just for Stephen this season, Under Armour gave him both a low-top and mid-cut version, as Curry has taken to wearing Lows during pre-game warmups, before lacing up the Mid for game time. Check out Stephen’s exact size 12.5 pairs of both the Under Armour Curry 3 Mid and Low, in his birthday “Dubfetti” theme edition below.
