A Closer Look at the Off-White x Converse Chuck 70

words by @mrsteriyaki images by @mymategym

In a short time following the Off-White x Converse Chuck 70 releasing, images of another all-white colourway surfaced online.

So I thought, for the folks that missed out on getting the first pair in hand and are waiting for the next to drop, let’s take a closer look at “The Ten” latecomer.

I’d had it in my mind to rock these with shorts and high white socks; shout out LA, so I wasted no time between purchasing and getting these on foot. The sun doesn’t come around too often this side of the pond.

The lateral and medial sides of the shoe are 80% transparent, meaning your socks set the vibe and tell most of the story when you wear them. Those panels are made from a very thin, completely breathable, plastic netting I want to say. It’s the same material used on some of the other models from “The Ten” but without any of the reinforcement of the foam. It’s actually quite an impressive component of the shoe, as I know some people were concerned about condensation forming due to all the rubber and plastic.

In true Converse style, this iteration by Virgil is quite rigid and comfort is not its strong point. But that being said, it’s frozen-like state is an aspect that I really enjoy – it keeps the outline clean and doesn’t lose its high top shape. To me, the One Star brand has always built shoes we can enjoy by wearing them into the ground, and I’m not approaching this one any different.

It’s rumoured that the delay of this release from the original “Ten” was due to manufacturing issues and questions around the durability of the plastic netting material discussed earlier. Whether any of that is true or not, I think the Converse Chuck 70 deserved its own separate release from “The Ten” we saw late last year. Although acquired by the Swoosh 15 years ago, I think the Converse works well outside its predecessor’s collection. It definitely acts as an effective catalyst for the future of Off-White x Nike releases.

To illustrate my intentions and the shoe’s capabilities, I had a slightly wild idea for a video review. Enjoy below and please leave a thought or two in the comments.

Peace.

Converse Chuck Taylor Adorns Two-Toned Gore-Tex Construction

In large part thanks to Virgil Abloh and J.W. Anderson, Converse’s Chuck Taylor All-Star is one of the hottest sneakers in all of footwear. Great collaborations tend to have that effect on historically revered silhouettes. Often times, something old simply needs to be seen through a modern lens to restore its acclaim.

Where Anderson is concerned, his vision was a simple one. Through his Glitter Gutter collaboration, he outfitted the Chuck Taylor in two-toned uppers. The foundational yet effective design method helped revived the All-Star while clearly inspiring something within Converse. New iterations of the model are done in two-tone uppers with a protective Gore-Tex coating that overlays brown and green paneling. Tongue construction appears in blue juxtaposing the smartly color blocked design.

This Converse Chuck Taylor All-Star Gore-Tex is available now in Japan at atmos. It’s unclear when this pair will debut Stateside.

Converse Continues NBA Collaboration with “City” and “Discovery” Edition Chuck Taylors

American footwear mainstay Converse extends its partnership with the NBA next week with two influential releases. Exploring the history of many of the league’s most storied franchises and the classic logos that have guided them through decades, Converse debuts City and Discovery Editions of the adored Chuck Taylor ’70.

Basketball, one of the ultimate cultural unifiers, stands at the center of this partnering NBA release which starts with the City Edition ($ 100). Here, Converse explores, and pays tribute to, famed logos over canvas Chuck Taylor’s inspired by the model’s design back in the 1970s.

As its moniker suggests, the Discovery Edition ($ 125) dives deeper into team heritage, vindicating context surrounding historically rich franchises. The Clippers pair touches on their port roots, while the Sixers edition highlights their championship years dating back to the 1950’s.

Available now in its entirety at Converse.com, take a detailed look at the NBA x Converse collection below and expect additional stock at global retailers on February 14.

Vince Staples’ Converse Collection Celebrates His “Big Fish Theory” Album

In a year flooded with new music from hip hop’s biggest artists, Long Beach native Vince Staples saw his second studio album, Big Fish Theory, rise above many others thanks to his thought-provoking dialogue and genre bending sonics. Converse honors his courageous and often divisive opinion with a new collection titled after the highly acclaimed record.

Staples’ unassuming and understated style works in union with Converse as many of their classic American styles have grown to prominence based in subtle aesthetics. Both the Chuck Taylor Hi and Ox Chuck ’70s that define this capsule are largely highlighted in a primary orange shade which mimics the goldfish on Staples album cover. Further, the theme continues with an aquarium sockliner, a Big Fish Theory graphic outsole and Staples’ name embroidered on the medial collar. The capsule also comes with a Converse Essentials Hoodie.

Expect the Vince Staples x Converse “Big Fish Theory” Collection on January 25 for Converse.com.

Converse Launches the Pro Leather ’76 – A Lifestyle Sneaker with Basketball Roots

Drawing from the sneaker’s past while pushing the shoe into the future, the Converse Pro Leather returns in two monochromatic colorways. The “Triple Black” and “Triple White” iterations of the newly upgraded Converse Pro Leather ‘76 merge the classic style with a Nike Lunarlon sockliner for added comfort and cushion.
