Jeremy Sallee Has Been Sketching Some Awesome Puma & Adidas Concepts

words // Nick DePaula:

Over time, Instagram has proven to not only be a platform where photographers can showcase their work to a widespread global audience, but it’s also become a growing home for artists and designers to highlight their latest concepts and ideas.

After suffering an unfortunate Achilles tear, footwear designer Jeremy Sallee has been posted up and posting a spree of sketches on his page, narrowing in primarily on new concepts for Puma Hoops and Adidas Basketball. With Puma’s grand return to the NBA and basketball space for the first time in two decades, his designs explore potential twists on bridging the brand’s past through a modernized lens.

The Adidas concepts are simply awesome, delving into some new branding options for The Three Stripes. Sallee formerly worked at Reebok, where he cooked up the recent Fusion DMX and Alpha standout models during his tenure with the vector. He’s currently the Design Director for Ralph Lauren footwear, with projects soon on the horizon.

You can keep up with Jeremy’s work and his playfully dubbed #AchillesSeries on his @jermsal10 Instagram account — best of luck with the rehab and recovery!

Steve Aoki & Lil Uzi Vert Are All About The Coins In “Been Ballin”

Nothing makes my heart race faster than TRL alums uniting to create something legendary. Steve Aoki and Lil Uzi Vert have done just that with their latest single “Been Ballin” and now there’s an official music video to capture the vibe of this dynamic collab.

Given that the song is about the perks of being a moneymaker, the visual shows exactly what the artists like to spend their paper on: all gold everything. (Is it just me or am I starting to see a theme here?) The track is featured on the producer’s latest album Kolony. Get a glimpse at all the coins and chains in the video below.

Rick Ross Has Reportedly Been Hospitalized

UPDATE (3/2/18, 6:24 p.m. ET): Rick Ross is potentially on life support, reports TMZ. According to the site’s sources, a machine is ”taking over the function of his heart and lungs.”

On Thursday (March 1), Rick Ross was reportedly taken to the hospital after being found unresponsive in his Miami home, according to TMZ.

At this time, it is not officially confirmed why Ross might be hospitalized. TMZ also reports that “a family member strongly denied Rick was hospitalized.”

Ross has faced health complications in the past, like the two seizures he experienced in 2011. On a 2016 episode of The Dr. Oz Show, Ross discussed the experience, via Rap-Up.

“One day, I was on a flight and, I just remember my buddy coming to get me, like, ‘Get up, homie, you just had a seizure. Let’s go. We got to get off the plane,’” said Ross. “And I’m like, ‘No… I don’t feel like I had one.’ So I actually got on the phone, called my private jet guy, 45 minutes later, after getting off a commercial flight, I was aboard in a private plane. I boarded a private plane. An hour into the flight, soon as I fell asleep, I had another seizure.”

Since then, Ross has touted his healthy lifestyle. He lost 75 pounds after the seizures and proudly showed off his specific brand of CrossFit named RossFit. Last year, he told People how he kept his weight down.

“I’ve just really been eating a lot better, working out, staying RossFit, and still enjoying myself,” said Rozay. “I still eat my Wingstop, I still go to Checkers for a burger, but as a whole, the late-night steaks, and in the studio it was really easy for me to go crazy from 11 [p.m.] to 4 a.m. I just cut that out.”

People throughout the entertainment industry took to social media to share their support for Ross.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.

Skechers’ Take on the adidas Stan Smith Has Been Shut Down by a Federal Judge

Imitation is the highest form of flattery, but sometimes it’s deemed illegal. Skechers, who has made the jump to second largest US footwear company behind Nike, has been ordered by a federal judge to stop producing three different shoes that bare striking resemblances to that of adidas — the marquee model being the Onix which is incredibly similar to the Stan Smith.

Oregon Live reports that Oregon’s U.S. District Judge Marco A. Hernandez was presented the Onix and Stan Smith only a few feet away from him in court and could not tell the difference, a factor that led to his final decision.

“Although Skechers points out minor differences between its Onix shoe and the Stan Smith — that the Onix has five, not three, rows of perforations which extend in a different direction, and that its colored heel patch is a slightly darker shade of green — the unmistakable overall impression is two nearly identical shoes,” Hernandez wrote. “Given the striking similarity between the shoes, there is but one inference to draw: that Skechers knowingly adopted a mark very similar to the Stan Smith to draw off of the success of Adidas’s iconic shoe.”

In response to the ruling, Skechers President Michael Greenberg issued a statement that although the company was disappointed by the ruling it would not strongly disrupt their business as the injunction involved “only three minor and commercially insignificant Skechers styles that have already been discontinued.” Following up, Greenberg stated, “While this is a non-issue from a commercial standpoint, we are disappointed in the ruling and fully intend to appeal it in order to ensure that our footwear designers retain the freedom to use common design elements that have long been in the public domain.”

Recently, Nike also sued Skechers for a design that draws from Flyknit (and even adidas Boost).

While the Skechers Onix is a blatant bite on the adidas Stan Smith, it also says a lot of about the bigger business of sneakers. The fact that Skechers has moved to #2 in the US makes selling a takedown on a classic hurt all the more. As pointed out in our Follow the Leader feature, we live in an era where high end fashion houses also bite sportswear staples. Clearly, there’s much more units moved in a lower priced Skechers shoe than that of a designer do-over (though fashion houses still get sued on occasion). One could argue that a high-end appropriation raises the perceived value of a sportswear staple, while a take-down from a lesser brand diminishes the value. Regardless, a copy is a copy and it undermines design and marketing dollars at some level. No idea is original, but you still gotta respect creativity and innovation. Congrats to adidas.
