Rich Homie Quan Helps Michigan State Celebrate Rose Bowl Win

By Sean Lynch

The Michigan State Spartans went into Pasadena, California, last night and won the 100th Rose Bowl in dramatic fashion. The win over the University of Stanford Cardinal had just about everyone feeling some “Type of Way.” None more than Atlanta’s rising star, Rich Homie Quan.

Quan and the Spartans have quite a unique connection off the field. The team from up north practically adopted Quan’s 2013 hit “Type of Way,” inside of the locker room. Videos of the team celebrating inside of the locker room; dancing and echoing the lyrics, surfaced going viral each time. Following a huge win over their rival University of Michigan, earlier this year, the Spartans found their fight song.

The anthem would be heard loud and clear on their way to a strong finish (13-1) and a ranking of #4 in the nation. The connection between the Atlanta based rapper and college football powerhouse became more evident when head coach, Mark Dantonio, gave Quan one heck of a shoutout during his Big Ten championship postgame interview.

Quan was taken back by the humbling adoption by the MSU football team. Following a New Year’s Eve performance in Charlotte, Quan spoke with Michigan based outlet, MLive. “For me to be on the field with Michigan State at the Rose Bowl, I’ll have the butterflies,” Quan explained during the phone interview. “I didn’t go to college, so this means a lot. I just want to shout out to the whole Michigan State alumni, it’s so special just to be a part of this movement.”

Getting to the Rose Bowl would not be so simple for the ATL rapper. MLive cites a number of personnel between both parties helped make it happen including Michigan State athletic director Mark Hollis, Head Coach Mark Dantonio, former Spartans football player andAtlanta recording studio CEO/owner Curtis Daniel III, Michigan State associate athletic director Alan Haller and director of college advancement and performance camp/director Curtis Blackwell all had hands in pulling Quan’s appearance off.

An early flight on Wednesday morning saw him landing in Los Angeles, followed by a drive to Pasadena. In the end, Quan ended up on hand for the game and celebration as the #4 Michigan State Spartans defeated the #5 Stanford Cardinal in the 100th Rose Bowl.

Drake Once Inspired Fabolous To Call His Grandmother

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Even rappers get emo when listening to Drake. Fabolous recently shared with Sway Calloway that listening to Drake’s “The Resistance” inspired him to connect with his grandmother.

“I heard they just moved my grandmother to a nursing home,” Drake raps on the personal track from 2010′s Thank Me Later. “And I be actin’ like I don’t know how to work a phone / But hit redial and you’ll see that I just called / Some chick I met at the mall that I barely know at all.”

The line about not making time for his family hit a particular chord with Fab. “[That] hit me so hard,” Fabolous said in the sit down with Sway’s Universe, “because I looked at it and said, ‘Damn, when was the last time I called my grandmoms, man?’ It just hit me. I had to stop the song and call my grandma. Rap used to do that for people. It used to make you live in what is going on. I told him that was my favorite shit he ever said. That touched me.”

Although Fab loves a good club banger, he applauded Drake for making music that moves him emotionally. “Sometimes I need something that’s gonna push me in a different direction, like ‘Yo, that guy said something that touched me’… Drake is one of those guys who’s from this generation, but he can rap. No matter what you say about the kid, he can rap.”

Kanye West Inspires New Textbook

Diesel Black Gold - Front Row - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2014

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Rapper, producer, fashionista, cultural icon: 2013 was a full year for Kanye West. The multi-talented superstar has now inspired a new textbook about (what else?) himself.

Fuse shares that Julius Bailey, a professor in the Department of Philosophy at Wittenberg University, is penning “The Cultural Impact of Kanye West.” The textbook, slated for March 6 release, “offers an in-depth reading of the works and cultural impact of Kanye West.”

You can pre-order the book on Amazon now for $ 80. The book about the self-proclaimed “college dropout” is summarized: “The ability of popular art to offer societal critiques and challenge received ideas has been recognized throughout history. Through rap and hip hop, composers, singers, and entertainers have recently provided a voice questioning and challenging the sanctioned view of the times. This book offers an in-depth reading of the works and cultural impact of Kanye West. Looking at the moral and social implications of West’s words, images, and music in the broader context of Western civilization’s preconceived ideas, the contributors consider how West both challenges religious and moral norms and propagates them.”

Kanye, Drake, Snoop And More Celebrate The Holidays

By Sowmya Krishnamurthy

Celebrities are just like us and nowhere is that more obvious than during the holidays. From dashing to the stores for those last minute gifts to gathering with family around the Christmas table, our favorite rappers and singers shared their holiday cheer on Instagram.

Kanye kept it klassy by hanging with his fiance Kim Kardashian at her family’s famous, annual Christmas bash. New Kardashian besties Tyga and his baby mama Blac Chyna also joined in, and shared flicks of themselves goofing around at the party’s photobooth.

Up in Canada, Drake poked fun at himself with a series of silly photos referencing the many memes he inspired in 2013, while Snoop Dogg turned into “Santa Dogg” and showed us what a very high St. Nick might look like.

On the R&B tip, Chris Brown made kissy faces with Karrueche while his ex-boo Rihanna flew back to Barbados. The bad girl turned good and brought home huge bags of gifts for her closest family.

Rap Genius Removed From Google Search

After being targeted by the National Music Publishers Association for “illegally” posting the lyrics to popular songs, Rap Genius has now been penalized by Google. According to the NY Times, the lyrics site has been removed from the search engine for inflating their traffic rankings.

Rap Genius was removed from Google search on Christmas Day, after representatives for the Brooklyn-based company came clean about practices that violate Google’s policy. In an apology letter, the founders wrote:

“The other strategy we employ on a much smaller scale (the subject of recent Hacker News controversy) is to find blogs whose content we think our followers will enjoy and ask them to link pages on Rap Genius that are relevant to their posts. We actually thought we had set this up to be compliant with Google’s linking policy in its Terms of Service, but we messed up and want to explain how.

Rap Genius’ traffic numbers have reportedly suffered from the swift Google search removal, dropping from over a million to under 3,00,000 in just a few days.

The Lox Detail Album Plans And Give Credit To Beyonce

(Swizz Beatz and Khaled make progress on The LOX album)

The LOX paid a visit to New York City’s Hot 97 radio station on Thursday morning (December 26) to chat about their new EP, upcoming album and being inspired by Beyonce’s sudden music drop, before getting into a debate about the state of New York hip-hop. Listen below.

“In this business, timing is everything,” Jada explained about dropping their new Trinity EP last week. “Your gut feeling is important and taking chances is always great. It’s like a gamble. Big shout-out to Beyoncé, she paved the way on a bigger scale, before it got exhausted from a hood level, a street perspective standpoint, we were able to do the same thing and capitalize. We ain’t do it because she did it, but – she made it better for us. She made it better.”

“We actually was going to release a few songs for the holidays, few songs, few freestyles,” Styles P added. “We were just going to drop it. We knew nothing of what she was doing and then she dropped it and that added the iTunes into it.”
